Russian For Trouble: The Meddling Narrative’s Fork in the Road

We’ve been deluged for more than a year with claims of Russian meddling in our Presidential election. Their exploits have been pretty much accepted by all, although there is also agreement that the Russians did not succeed in corrupting any vote tallies.

We have also faced an onslaught of allegations of collusion with Russia by the Trump campaign. Even Trump’s most ardent detractors agree they have failed to find and produce any evidence of it. That method of attack has turned into one big nothing burger (to hijack a Hillaryism).

Now, the interference and collusion narratives are beginning to swerve in a new direction.

First, there was testimony by the now jobless Jim Comey that Attorney General Loretta Lynch told him to refer to the FBI’s Clinton email investigation as a “matter” rather than what it really was (a criminal investigation). Comey testified that her directive made him feel “queasy”. He chewed a few Tums and did it anyway.

We already knew that Lynch met with Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac in Phoenix. This happened just days before Comey publicly declared Hillary was reckless and extremely careless in handling classified information. He also, inexplicably to law enforcement and intelligence types, said that it was no big deal. Nothing to see here…let’s move on.

Now, an investigation of the actions of Loretta Lynch has been announced, and even top Democrats are becoming nauseous. The detour taken by the interference story has made it clear that the “election meddling” path is hardly a one way street.

Apparently the public at large have gotten sick to their stomachs, too. According to a Harvard-Harris poll just released, 73% of responders said that “they’re concerned that the Russia probes have caused Congress to lose focus on the issues important to them. That figure encompasses 81 percent of Republicans, 74 percent of independents and 68 percent of Democrats.”

Here are a few recent news reports that are making things worse:

  • President Obama was inexplicably lax in his response to Russian meddling.
  • Democrats Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris were behind a just-retracted CNN story about Russia/Trump collusion.
  • A sketchy DC firm with ties to Democrats is stonewalling congressional investigators on their commissioning of the discredited “golden shower” dossier.

The stack of ‘evidence’ driving the trip to impeachment has turned out to be a pile of something very different at the end of the road.

The relentless Drive Toward Impeachment has reached a turning point. The road well traveled has reached a fork. As Yogi Berra famously advised, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
